Ben Simmons – Australia’s Best. Now a Three Times NBA Allstar.

As a young boy playing out there for the Knox Raiders did Ben Simmons ever imagine the glittering career he would eventually carve out in the NBA?  If it were today, not back in 2009, a young Ben would most likely be honing his craft on superb Nellakir installed timber sports flooring.

Nellakir use Australian hardwood selected timbers and are the only Victorian installers with access to FIBA approved Australian hardwood timber sports flooring

But back to Ben, congratulations on the honour of being named an NBA Allstar for the third time. Read about it here:

Boomers guard Ben Simmons creates history to become a three-time NBA All-Star

Ben Simmons isn’t everyone’s favourite player, but he has defied the doubters to pick up his third successive NBA All-Star appearance.

Australian Ben Simmons has his critics, but he is a three-time NBA All-Star after being named an Eastern Conference reserve for the third straight season.

Simmons’ inclusion is a testament to his all-round game and winning influence at the Philadelphia 76ers, but his selection has raised some eyebrows.

The Melbourne-born guard doesn’t have a jump shot and struggles to fire from range, which are must-have qualities according to some experts and fans.

This view is particularly prominent in America, with many critics believing Simmons is undeserving of an All-Star appearance due to his lack of shooting and big scoring compared to other players.

Yet what is often overlooked and undervalued with the Boomers star is his impressive ability to make an impact at both ends of the floor.

Despite no established jump shot, Simmons still averages 15.7 points (last four games 27.8 points) while he regular makes his teammates better with pinpoint passing.

He is also arguably the NBA’s best defender and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate this season.

However, the NBA’s All-Star concept is focused heavily on the fan vote (50 per cent), and the most popular players are usually selected with a focus on big-scoring performers compared to any other facet of the game.

Regardless, Simmons is an All-Star again, and it’s a significant achievement for the Australia’s best player.

There are some players who should feel unlucky to miss out on All-Star selection, including DeMar DeRozan, Trae Young, Domantas Sabonis and Tobias Harris.

LA Lakers star and Western Conference captain LeBron James couldn’t believe the “disrespect” shown to Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker.

“Devin Booker is the most disrespected player in our league!!! Simple as that,” James tweeted.

The NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, March 5 in Atlanta.

Ball attracted a strong fan base in Australia during his NBL season with the Illawarra Hawks.

His popularity was on show against the Sydney Kings last year when he helped attract the biggest crowd in NBL history, with 17,514 fans attending Qudos Bank Arena.

Australia’s infatuation with Ball continues now he is in the NBA, as shown through his singlet sales.

Singlet results are based on sales from NBAStore.com.au, the official online NBA Store in Australia, from the beginning of the 2020-21 NBA season.

Rounding out the top five jerseys are the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry at No. 2, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James at No. 3 – he led the list last year – the Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant at No. 4 and the Washington Wizards’ Russell Westbrook at No. 5.

Basketball – Netball – The Evolution of Sports Flooring

For students and aficionados of the Hoop games, the Timber Sports Flooring is sacrosanct. All major competitions in both Basketball and Netball worldwide are played on professionally installed Sprung Timber Flooring. In Victoria and Tasmania the leaders in the professional installation and maintenance of premium Timber Sports Flooring is Nellakir.

Today’s Timber Sports Flooring owes much to the progression of the sport of Basketball. Basketball’s origins can be traced to Springfield Massachusetts way back in 1891 where to cope with long periods of inactivity due to winter blizzards at the YMCA training school located there, a young Canadian 2nd year Graduate Student, James Naismith developed a game to keep the attending students active.

Naismith cleared the Gymnasium’s Timber floor of equipment and made do with two peach baskets at each end of the gym, nailed to the lower rail of the balcony, 10 feet off the ground. A soccer ball was used in those first ever games at the YMCA.

After the first few games Naismith sat down and devised ‘the 13 rules’. No running with the ball – it had to be batted (bounced) or thrown. The new rules were introduced and the ‘rough house’ elements of the game were eliminated – tackling and slugging resulted in ‘fouls’ ,which now ultimately advantaged the other team.

The game spread quickly. By 1898 a Professional League was established in the USA. The new game took hold in the US, Canada and the UK. ‘Dribbling’ was introduced in 1901.

The game rapidly gained popularity and refinement. A women’s variant ‘Netball’ was established in England soon after Basketball was created by Naismith. Like Basketball its popularity spread quickly –this time throughout the British Empire. The facts are that at the highest levels of participation, Basketball, Netball and Gymnastics have generally been played or performed on Timber Courts. From old fruit packing sheds with peach baskets to unique proper sprung timber flooring.

This remains the case today. As Olympic sports, both Basketball and Netball are played on sprung timber sports flooring. In Australia the timber used is more often either Tasmanian Oak or Messmate. A true timber court is not unlike a musical instrument, tuned to provide the ultimate in pace, bounce and compression, lessening the strain and risk of injury to competitors.

Worldwide major competitions are played on Timber Sports Flooring. The court is highly polished and finished with protective coatings. The NBA is the premiere basketball competition. All NBA games are played on FIBA approved courts. The same is true for Australia’s NBL competition and the premiere Netball competition – the Suncorp Super Netball competition – all are played on Sprung Timber Sports Flooring.

Maintenance is relatively simple. Annually the following tasks must be undertaken:

  • Annual line marking on sport floors
  • Annual maintenance programs
  • Re-coating after 12 months on all sprung timber sports flooring

Other tasks that must occur over longer periods (7 years or more) include:

  • Resurfacing of existing floors – sports floors on stadiums, halls and gymnasiums, timber flooring in churches
  • Re-sanding of all sprung timber sports floors
  • Removal and refitting of existing floors
  • Removal and replacement of stadium seating

The installation of Timber Sports Flooring requires a specialist team with both knowledge, experience and effective access to FIBA approved Sports Flooring systems or similar to ensure a premium finish and longevity.

Timber is a natural material, it means those using it are less likely to suffer injury or tire and it looks simply stunning. Today most State Governments stipulate the use of Australian Hardwoods in installing Sports Flooring.

Nellakir and Netball

In Australia, Netball is one of the most popular and fastest growing sports for women and girls. From primary school through to National Competition, the sport is now being acknowledged for its universal appeal and popularity Australia wide.

Here in Victoria, the State Government has recognised this fact and provided funding for a series of new Competition Courts (using Sprung Timber Sports Flooring). Nellakir is in the final stages of installing these new courts and when permitted we will provide a viewing here for all to enjoy.

Add to this the installations the Victorian State government is implementing through its VSBA program where all new schools built feature a multipurpose Court finished in Timber Sports Flooring for the students and community to compete at Netball, Basketball and other sports such as Gymnastics, Volleyball and a full range of indoor sports.

Nellakir are the experts in the professional installation and maintenance of all Timber Sports Flooring using the ASF/Horner Timber Sports Flooring Systems exclusively throughout Victoria and Tasmania.

Ms Go and Mr Steiner thanked the Nine network and Telstra for supporting Suncorp Super Netball during a crucial period of growth and consolidation.

‘’Nine and Telstra saw the potential of the league and provided support at a critical time. We look forward to working closely with them during season 2021 and thank them for their commitment to the game,’’ Mr Steiner said.
