Ben Simmons – All Star 2020 – From Melbourne to Chicago.

From Box Hill Secondary College to the NBA. Born in Fitzroy, now playing for the Philadelphia 76’s. He could have been a sharp on-baller for the bombers in the AFL after playing A-Grade for Whitefriars College as a youth, but instead he chose Basketball. Now from humble beginnings at the Knox Raiders he’s lining up with LeBron’s All Stars in Chicago this coming weekend.

Here’s the lowdown on his career development and progress this year…

By The Numbers: Ben Simmons

Screen Shot 2020-02-14 at 2.30.08 pm

Ben Simmons is set to compete in his second All-Star Game in Chicago as he’ll take the floor as part of Team LeBron.

In his first All-Star appearance last season, the Aussie finished with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting in just under 17 minutes of action.

Despite the relative turmoil in Philadelphia for a 76ers team that has thus far underachieved, it’s impossible to deny that Simmons has once again performed at an All-Star level and is deserving of the All-Star honour.

Let’s go by the numbers to help articulate just how good Simmons has been so far this season.

Screen Shot 2019-08-02 at 10.15.04 am

216 – Deflections

The biggest leap that Simmons has made this season has come on the defensive end, where he’s emerged as a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

Not only does he lead the league in steals, he’s also first in deflections, which further illustrates his ability to disrupt anything and everything. The fact that at 6’10” he has the ability to cause so much chaos shouldn’t go understated.

Only three other players in NBA history 6’10” or taller have ever averaged over two steals per game. Simmons could become the first player that tall to lead the entire league in steals.

Screen Shot 2020-02-14 at 1.23.07 pm

His development into a versatile stopper capable of legitimately guarding all five positions could further elevate the ceiling for a player still just scratching the surface of his potential.

+7.0 – Scoring increase

In Philadelphia’s first game after the calendar flipped to 2020, Simmons poured in 29 points on what at the time was a season-high 20 shots. Although the 76ers lost that game to the Houston Rockets, it proved to be a turning point of sorts for Simmons, who has looked like a completely different player since.

Over his first 34 games, Simmons averaged just 14.5 points per game, which was over two fewer than last season when he earned his first trip to the All-Star Game. Over that span, he had just one 25-point game, which ranked fifth on the team and was fewer than the likes of Nemanja Bjelica, Ish Smith, Jordan McRae and Garrett Temple to name a few.

Scoring isn’t everything, particularly in the case of Simmons, but that’s not great.

Then came that game against Houston which ignited a torrid stretch. In 19 games since, he’s averaging 21.5 points per game, an increase of 7.0 PPG from before the calendar flipped to 2020. While 10 of those games came without Joel Embiid in the lineup, he also has three 25-point games over that span alongside his fellow All-Star teammate.

Screen Shot 2020-02-14 at 1.23.52 pm

He’s actively playing a larger role in the offense, shooting more often and getting to the line more frequently.

11420342-3x2-700x467

60 – Secondary assists

He’s long been one of the best passers in the league and this year is no exception.

While Simmons ranks fifth in the NBA in assists per game, he actually ranks third in potential assists per game as the 76ers take over 16 shots per game directly off his passes, a figure which trails only LeBron James and Trae Young.

One of the beautiful aspects of Ben’s passing is that he sees the pass before the pass like few others.

The secondary assist – or hockey assist – is a pass that leads to a pass which leads to a made shot. They don’t show up in the box score, but they’re indicative of a player knowing how to move the ball quickly and find teammates in positions where they can then exploit the D.

So far this season, he has 60 of them, which leads the entire league and is nearly twice as many as anyone else on the 76ers.

The unselfish playmaking is a major reason why Simmons should be a desirable teammate this upcoming weekend in Chicago as he’s a threat to wrack up the dimes.

The current NBA rankings are as follows (Courtesy of Jason Guilbault and reprinted from Lineup.com)

2020 NBA Power Rankings (Updated 12.13.2019)

los-angeles-lakers1. Los Angeles Lakers

2019-2020 Record 22-3 Previous Rank: 2

Winning nine of their last ten games, and with the big names clicking, the Lakers come in red hot. Anthony Davis and LeBron James are playing like an MVP duo, and that rusty start to the season is nowhere to be found.

milwaukee-bucks.png2. Milwaukee Bucks

2019-2020 Record: 22-3 Previous Rank: 3

The Bucks have rattled off 16 straight wins at the moment, and are putting up over 120 points per game. Giannis Antetokounmpo has taken his game to another level, and the secondary pieces are all playing well.

los-angeles-clippers.png3. LA Clippers

2019-2020 Record 19-7 Previous Rank: 5

You could say this Los Angeles team has had a harder time gelling with new names, but now 8-2 in their last ten games, and everyone healthy again, the Clippers have been showing why they are such a tough team to beat.

miami-heat.png4. Miami Heat

2019-2020 Record 18-6 Previous Rank: 6

Miami is just seemingly playing under the radar as they have the third best winning percentage in the league right now. Jimmy Butler has been playing excellent basketball, but once again Erik Spolstra has been doing a lot with younger or lesser names.

philadelphia-76ers5. Philadelphia 76ers

2019-2020 Record 19-7 Previous Rank: 10

Philadelphia has struggled on the road this season going 6-7, but they have dominated at home. Defensively they have been excellent, but offense has hit a wall at times. This was expected to be an early season struggle at times, and hopefully it is just that.

toronto-raptors.png6. Toronto Raptors

2019-2020 Record: 16-8 Previous Rank: 8

Toronto has hit some tougher teams in their schedule, and we have seen them showcase where they are exactly at in this league. They are a top ten team for sure, but are closer to ten than they are to one.

lead_720_405.jpg

Houston-Rockets.jpg7. Houston Rockets

2019-2020 Record: 16-8 Previous Rank: 9

Houston is a tough team to rank right now, as they have been a bit inconsistent to start the season. James Harden is scoring at will, but overall this team doesn’t seem to have quite the same appeal as the last year or two.

dallas-mavericks.png8. Dallas Mavericks

2019-2020 Record 17-7 Previous Rank: 12

Dallas is certainly here. They are scoring 118 points per game with Luka Doncic leading the way, and we have yet to see Kristaps Porzingis really click. The Mavericks are 8-2 in their last ten games and have put themselves as one of the better teams in basketball.

indiana-pacers.png9. Indiana Pacers

2019-2020 Record 16-9 Previous Rank: 14

Indiana is 7-3 in their last ten games, and Malcolm Brogdon has strong competition for most improved but we can see what he brings to the Pacers. Domantas Sabonis has also been playing tremendous basketball.
Boston Celtics10. Boston Celtics

boston-celtics.png10. Boston Celtics

2019-2020 Record 17-7 Previous Rank: 1

It has been a few weeks since I last updated, so you can see a steeper drop here for Boston. They have failed to beat some of the more notable teams of late, and the offense and rebounding still seem iffy.

denver-nuggets.png11. Denver Nuggets

2019-2020 Record 15-8 Previous Rank: 4

A team that was expected to be contenders in the west has not looked to be that just yet. Returning the same core, this is a bit confusing, even with a tougher conference. Defensively they have played well, but the offense comes and goes, and the same goes with Nikola Jokic.

utah-jazz.png12. Utah Jazz

2019-2020 Record 14-11 Previous Rank: 7

Utah has been a bit disappointing so far this season, but there is still a long way to go. They have slipped of late going 4-6 in their last ten games, as they have really struggled on the road.

brooklyn-nets-barclays-nyc-courtesy-brooklyn-nets-20171020_magic_nets__nsb8586__x_large.jpg

brooklyn-nets.png13. Brooklyn Nets

2019-2020 Record 13-11 Previous Rank: 17

Brooklyn has gone 9-4 without Kyrie Irving this season, and are a few games over .500 now on the year. This has been a weird season for Brooklyn, and Irving’s return is going to cause more talking points if they slip once he returns.

phoenix-suns.png14. Phoenix Suns

2019-2020 Record 11-13 Previous Rank: 11

We knew Phoenix wasn’t going to keep it up, but this team is already drastically improved upon last year. Deandre Ayton is going to return from suspension fairly soon, which will help.

oklahoma-city-thunder.png15. Oklahoma City Thunder

2019-2020 Record 11-13 Previous Rank: 18

Oklahoma City has relied upon their strong defense so far this season, and while they are not going anywhere this season, they have been very competitive and not an easy win for the rest of the league.

orlando-magic.png16. Orlando Magic

2019-2020 Record 11-13 Previous Rank: 20

This is looking a lot like last year’s Orlando team where they are struggling to score, but the defense has been able to keep them in games. They are allowing the fewest points per game this season, but are also scoring the fewest.

sacramento-kings.png17. Sacramento Kings

2019-2020 Record 11-13 Previous Rank: 24

It was a slow start to the season, but the Sacramento Kings have picked up their play. It was going to be tough building upon last season, but the Kings flirting with a .500 record the rest of the way wouldn’t be the worst outcome.

MinnesotaTimberwolves.jpg18. Minnesota Timberwolves

2019-2020 Record 10-14 Previous Rank: 13

Currently on a six game losing streak, and 2-8 in the last ten games, Minnesota’s fast start to the season quickly came to a close. Defensively this team continues to be one of the worst in the league.

charlotte-hornets.png19. Charlotte Hornets

2019-2020 Record 11-16 Previous Rank: 23

I don’t think anybody expected Charlotte to be this competitive. It comes with Devonte Graham who has blossomed into a machine in the Hornets backcourt. While they still have below average talent around him, the Hornets are not a team to take lightly.

detroit-pistons.png20. Detroit Pistons

2019-2020 Record 10-15 Previous Rank: 21

Detroit continues to play middling basketball, and are 5-5 in the last ten games. Blake Griffin has not looked like himself since returning, and the injury might still be looming.

merlin_164533344_5ec704a8-c067-4491-8472-c0a4d00bb22b-articleLarge.jpg

portland-trail-blazers.png21. Portland Trail Blazers

2019-2020 Record 10-16 Previous Rank: 16

The Trail Blazers have been one of the more disappointing teams in the league this season, which is surprising after being one of the more consistent teams in the league. However, this might be the year they look to move pieces around Lillard.

san-antonio-spurs.png22. San Antonio Spurs

2019-2020 Record 9-15 Previous Rank: 15

San Antonio is allowing 115 points per game, which is uncharacteristic for them. DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge are not a duo that will contend, and the Spurs have to know that.

chicago-bulls.png23. Chicago Bulls

2019-2020 Record 9-17 Previous Rank: 27

Chicago is on their way to at least surpassing last year’s win total, but they remain one of the poorer teams in the league. Zach LaVine leads a stagnant offense, and we haven’t seen bigger steps from the young guy.

usa_today_13728996.0.jpg

memphis-grizzlies.png24. Memphis Grizzlies

2019-2020 Record 8-16 Previous Rank: 25

Memphis has a young core that is fun to watch, and they are pushing the pace more than any other season prior. The wins won’t come, but at least Memphis is a team we get excited to watch.

washington-wizards.png25. Washington Wizards

2019-2020 Record 7-16 Previous Rank: 29

The Wizards have a young team of names they are looking to see if they fit in the future. It won’t be a pretty record, but this Wizards team can put up points in bunches, unfortunately they are allowing over 120 per game.

Atlanta-Hawks.jpg26. Atlanta Hawks

2019-2020 Record 6-19 Previous Rank: 19

Atlanta continues to spiral out of control, which is a bummer after I believed they could be a team to push the playoff picture given the talented young squad. That prediction looks to be a year away.

new-orleans-pelicans.png27. New Orleans Pelicans

2019-2020 Record 6-19 Previous Rank: 26

There were higher expectations than what they likely should have had. New Orleans has now lost ten straight games, and continue to allow teams to run right through them offensively.

cleveland-cavaliers.png28. Cleveland Cavaliers

2019-2020 Record 6-19 Previous Rank: 22

Cleveland has listed about everyone for a possible trade as they are 6-19 and heading back down in the standings to where they were last season. This team will get worse once Kevin Love is traded.

golden-state-warriors.jpg29. Golden State Warriors

2019-2020 Record: 5-21 Previous Rank: 30

Golden State is just flat out taking a year off after being the best team in the league over the last five years. With the lineups they are rolling out due to injuries, it is no surprise.

new-york-knicks.png30. New York Knicks

2019-2020 Record 5-20 Previous Rank: 28

The Knicks are the Knicks. They continue to be ran in a horrendous fashion. Dave Fizdale has now been fired, and this is not a job I would want moving forward.

The Young Boomers – Australia’s latest crop.

Every year more young Australians are both nominated for the NBA draft and being accepted by a wide range of teams within the conference.

The standard of Australian Basketball is now at an all time high with our National team, the Boomers, considered a top hope in this year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup to be staged in China this September. This is the Men’s Championship. The Women’s Competition is held non-sequentially with the next World Cup event scheduled for 2022 in Bulgaria.

OgImage_en.png

The standard of Australian Basketball owes much to the improvement of Court facilities nationally. The proliferation of proper Sprung Timber Sports Flooring has occurred at a rapid rate since 2007, with many schools now boasting multipurpose Timber Sports Flooring courts. As well the federal and State Governments have actively funded State regional and suburban stadiums and Court complexes.

For the last 10-12 years, young students and community competitions have enjoyed the benefits of fully professional FIBA approved playing surfaces. No longer is there a transition period from hard surfaces to timber sports flooring and the consequent period of adjustment.

This season’s crop of young Boomers is living testimony to these advances.

Read about it here…

FIBA World Cup 2019: Boomers of the future – Who will lead the next generation of Aussies?

Screen Shot 2019-08-06 at 4.48.03 pm.jpg

With the Boomers assembling in Melbourne for their pre-World Cup selection camp, the squad is infused with a mixture of young and old.

Veterans Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Ingles, and Aron Baynes will lead the way once again in China at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, with Mills acknowledging the role of the senior players in fostering a winning environment for the program.

“Our leadership group has a responsibility to pass on what it means to be a Boomer and play for your country and make sure this program is at its peak knowing the type of talent coming through,” Mills said.

“We understand where we want this program to go and to achieve the number one goal of winning a medal and a gold medal as well.”

While the core group still has plenty of productive years ahead, with one eye on the future, we look at the Aussies who will carry the torch down the track as they usher in the next generation of Boomers.

Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers – age 23)

simmons_14tpp1ybsf08318uii61xi2vla.jpg

While Simmons won’t be in China for the World Cup, the All-Star point guard has re-affirmed his commitment to pulling on the green and gold in Tokyo next year as Australia chases its first Olympic medal for the men’s team.

Simmons gives the Boomers a commanding presence at the point guard position, ensuring a mismatch every time he steps on the floor, but given Australia’s glut of guards, the 6-foot-10 powerhouse can also be deployed as a power forward with his size and ability to finish at the rim.

Jonah Bolden (Philadelphia 76ers – age 23)

Screen Shot 2019-08-06 at 4.50.08 pm.jpg

Bolden is set to make his Boomers debut this year and figures as a key contributor at the World Cup.

At 6-foot-10, with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, Bolden gives the Boomers a key frontcourt piece for right now and in the future, with the flexibility to play as an international four or five.

Alongside Bogut and Baynes in the paint, Bolden’s athleticism and length provides the Boomers with a versatile floor-spacing big for coach Andrej Lemanis to switch things up and expect to see him get plenty of burn in China.

“It would mean the world to the country, and to the players themselves,” Bolden told Basketball Australia of winning a medal. “So for me, that’s obviously the goal… It’s definitely a challenge but I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure the other guys are looking forward to it as well.

“It’s always been a dream to play for the national team growing up. Being born and raised in Australia, for me it’s exciting times.”

Jock Landale (Zalgiris Kaunas, Lithuania – age 23)

basketball-nba-bucks-jock-landale-1400x800.jpg

Landale is on the cusp of making the Boomers squad for China after an impressive Summer League campaign for the Milwaukee Bucks, averaging 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game on 55 percent shooting from the field.

The 23-year-old continues to expand his game and has developed a reliable three-point shot to compliment his already polished low-post game.

Deng Adel (Brooklyn Nets – age 22)

maxresdefault.jpg

Perhaps Australia’s greatest area of need down the track is depth on the wing, with Ingles and Ryan Broekhoff, who will miss the World Cup, currently the Boomers best options on the perimeter.

While Adel doesn’t have the same threat from beyond the arc as Ingles and Broekhoff, the 22-year-old continues to improve as a shooter. Widely expected to make the roster for China, Adel’s high motor and athleticism will give the Boomers another transition threat at the World Cup and beyond.

Dante Exum (Utah Jazz – age 24)

exum_354wwgipmhzq1cul5c22se8a0.jpg

Exum won’t be in China for the World Cup as he continues his recovery from a knee injury, however he looks to be a certain stalwart for the Boomers down the track.

Mills and Dellavedova have had a monopoly on Australia’s point guard duties in recent years, but if the Utah Jazz point guard can stay healthy next season, he will be primed to play a big role at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Thon Maker (Detroit Pistons – age 22)

thon-maker-nba-draft-2016-grades.jpg

Maker made his Boomers debut last year against the Phillippines, but will miss the upcoming World Cup to focus on his development with the Detroit Pistons.

While Bolden and Landale are currently with the squad in camp, Maker has the highest ceiling of new wave of big men and with his size and shot-blocking ability, he projects to have a bright future in international basketball and will push for selection at next year’s Olympics.

Josh Green (Arizona – age 18)

green_hhxwbwkdg83j1umsj8v9g0yyy.jpg

Green is the youngest of the group and is yet to even play a game in the NCAA, but all indicators point to him being a high draft pick in 2020. Will that be too soon to see him in Tokyo? Most likely, but Green is certainly one to watch for the future.

The springy 18-year-old looks every bit the modern NBA combo guard at 6-foot-6 and alongside Exum and Simmons could form a dynamic playmaking trio for the Boomers.

Is this Basketball? The Phillipines – Basketbrawl

basketball-brawl-main-740x357

The Boomers vs The Phillipines turned into a farce, albeit a very dangerous farce in the game between Australia and the Phillipines in Manila on Monday. The game was abandoned and it is expected that FIBA, the world Basketball Organisation, will come down hard on the protagonists. Chairs were thrown and one Australian player – the smallest – Nathan Sobey had over 12 players and officials punching and kicking him. Boomers Assistant Coach Luc Longley rescued both he and Chris Goulding from the assault – which he lays squarely at the feet of the Phillipines Coach – Chot Reyes.

“I do believe Chot Reyes incited them to do that” said Longley

Back here in Australia, Nellakir are preparing our competition playing surfaces for the next generation of Australian champions. (There is some doubt as to whether the Australian team might venture back to the Phillipines any time soon)

Currently the Nellakir team are doing a strong round of annual maintenance projects in the school holiday period.

At Beaconsfield, St Francis Xavier’s Secondary College, where Nellakir recently finished construction of a flood damaged full size court, ensuring the school has virtually two brand new courts at the start of the new term.

It is also carrying out another re-sanding job at Berrindale School in Hampton. A small multi-purpose Gymnasium style area is being fully refreshed and refurbished.
